8.x Domino SMTP issues

I’ve had a couple of recent annoying Domino SMTP issues with a customer’s server I thought I’d post my findings here.

The issue seems to have cropped up somewhere after the initial 8.0 release. Basically, SMTP mail gets stuck in the mail.box (can sit there for days) and the console displays:

Router: No messages transferred to SAMPLE.COM (host SAMPLE.COM) via SMTP: The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists.

If you restart the router or issue “tell router update config” the queue is cleared, but then 30 minutes later the same thing occurs again. All server level DNS seems fine, and the server also had the DNSServer= notes.ini entry set (there’s also a registry entry reported to have helped DNS issues for some people with Domino also, but I’ve misplaced the link – fwiw I tried that too, no change).

I’ve seen this on a customer site running 8.02 and later 8.5, while other customers aren’t experiencing it at all. The 8.02FP1 fix pact is also reported not to fix it.

For now, a program document every 20 minutes issuing the “tell router update config” command is keeping the queues clear, but this seems to be a pretty frustrating bug to have survived in the 8.x codebase for this long.

As a side note, I'd never used the "tell router show" command before (because I'd never had to). Seems to be something which could be quite useful for debugging.

We've had these problems in R6, R7 and R8 - the work around I found is the same as yours...so we created the program for nserver -c "tell router update config" but we also issue a -c "route *" command also to retry all mail which is currently sitting rather than wait for the general retry. If you ever find any other solution...let me know. Cheers, Brian

Thank you so much for the help. We have Domino 8.5 right now.

Do you also know how to get the server to automatically try messages that have moved to the hold status without having to manually select "resend selected held messages"? Can this be in a program document too?
