I also manually approve all comments and considered letting people know this but maybe now I won't.

While I don't have a CAPTCHA Akismet would pick up the bulk of it but leave it along with some false positives in the spam section so I switched to manually IP banning places that comment spam more than once and my 'spam' section is now just 3-4 messages a day (down from about 80-120).

Are you sure you're getting people manually bypass? Your CAPTCHA looks quite simple being just 4 letters and no skew/twist/color - I've read about many CAPTCHA-cracking libraries being available to spammers and integrated into their tools.

I'd try switching it out for a more complex one and see if it drops off.

Thanks Damien, part of what I wasn't sure of was how far CAPTCHA cracking had come recently. I'll look at switching to something more complex.

Funnily enough, knowing that these comments are coming via something automated vs someone sitting there doing it manually is quite reassuring :)

Due to excessive comment spam, all comments are now being moderated. If you're a comment spammer then you're wasting your time here. Your comments will not be published - ever.
